Finally, your contractor has received the “CO” Certificate of Occupancy. A term you will learn and be excited about because you will know it means you can finally move into your new home.
What now ? It’s time for a final walkthrough with your contractor, to give him your “Punch List”, that is the list of items that you expect corrected. Some examples would be:
- Light fixture that is backordered and needs to be installed
- Scratches on walls that need to be repainted
- Deck or porch to be finished on the back of the house
The punch list should not have any elements that will stop you from being able to move into your new home.
You will receive the keys to your new home either from your contractor, or at your closing with your financial specialists. When you receive your keys, you will want to decide if you change the locks on your home or keep the locks that you have. Some people feel more secure changing the locks.
Utilities:
Before you move in, you want to make sure all your utilities are turned on. The contractor most likely had the utilities on, and you will need to move them over into your name.
Cleaning
Most moving sites suggest a Deep Clean before you move in, and we agree. However, many contractors hire someone to clean new homes and prepare them for move in, so you may not have to do this. It may be taken care of for you.
