Journey to your Dream Home: Preparing for the Selections Process

How do I prepare ? Do I read a lot of books, go online and pick things I like off of websites, look at things up close at Home Depot or Lowes ? What can I do to get ahead and be ready for the selection process?

Making the selection process for your new home can be an extremely difficult and even an emotional task.  The difficulty meter will go up or down the scale depending on how long you plan to live in you new home.

It is a home being built to your precise specifications.  But is it going to be your home for just for a few years, or is it a forever home ?  If it is going to be your home for a few years, and you plan on reselling, you need to choose things that will hold their resale value.  That will require some research on your part.  But you can do it !  If you need some help, ask experts like the ones at Ideal Cabinets, or our friends at Ferguson Lighting.

If this is going to be your forever home …wow, then there is a lot more pressure to get it exactly right !!  That word “forever” it just hangs there.  (logically you know somewhere in the back of your mind that all homes can be changed – flooring taken up, etc – but it doesn’t feel that way, when you are choosing things for your forever home.)   Just take your time.  Make a list.

Decide what is most important to you.

Then see how far your budget will go.

If you can afford all of the things that are important to you – great, Congratulations !

If not, look at your list, and see which things will be the easiest to upgrade later. (For example, light fixtures will be easier to upgrade later than flooring will be.).

Now see what you can take off the list and put on the “Update later list”

Now you know where to put your budget.
