It was just another day at Ideal Cabinets, and Ken Rakes was smiling proudly as he took his sweet granddaughter, Sydney, by the arm and took her to lunch. She was home from college and working in the showroom for the summer. Ken always had a gleam in his eye when he talked about Sydney. “She’s got something special”, Ken would often say about Sydney’s creativity. He enjoyed the many things they had in common and the talents they shared. He was so proud of her, and the future that he knew she would have. And as he usually was about most things, Ken was right about Sydney. *
Sydney is a passionate and emerging designer. She is proudly following in the footsteps of the long-standing family tradition at Ideal. She is the daughter of Pat and Jana Rakes, and the granddaughter of Ken and Virginia Rakes. Sydney is the latest generation to contribute to the family business that has thrived for over 55 years. Her design journey began early, influenced by her family’s dedication and her inherent creativity.
After graduating from Lord Botetourt High School, Sydney pursued her undergraduate studies at Virginia Tech in Blacksburg, VA. Go Hokies! There, she graduated with a Bachelor’s degree in Business Management with a concentration in Entrepreneurship. Her academic journey continued at Virginia Commonwealth University (VCU), where she completed a Master of Fine Arts degree in Interior Design. During her time at VCU, Sydney gained extensive hands-on experience. She learned essential skills such as:
- Hand Drafting
- Hand Sketching,
- Architectural Model Making,
- Mastering AutoCAD Software
- Mastering Revit, SketchUp, and the Adobe Creative Suite.
At VCU Sydney’s thesis project focused on designing transitional housing for women and children through trauma-informed design. This was new terminology for us, so we asked Sydney to explain what trauma-informed design meant. She said, “it reflects a commitment to addressing the psychological and physical needs of individuals who have experienced trauma.” She continued, “This is accomplished by creating spaces that promote safety, comfort, and privacy.” Sydney said she was inspired to do this because of the volunteering her family has always done in their community, especially at the Rescue Mission.
Her design ethos emphasizes balance, authenticity, inspiration, innovation, and empowerment. She believes that creating a balance in design establishes a feeling of harmony and organization within a space, while authenticity ensures each project reflects a story or a client’s vision. Sydney views design as a transformative tool, capable of infusing joy and inspiration into everyday spaces. She believes innovation is a key aspect of interior design. She feels each designer and client have endured unique experiences that shape new and fresh ideas for space. Most of all she believes clients should be empowered as they enter space, feeling accepted and encouraged.
It is amazing to see what Sydney has learned, and how it fits so perfectly with what her family has always strived for at Ideal — taking care of customers and making a space that enriches and improves their lives.
Currently pursuing her CKBD (Certified Kitchen and Bath Designer) certification, Sydney, is gradually taking on more responsibilities within Ideal. She is enthusiastic about the opportunity to contribute to the family business, and to learn from her experienced colleagues. Her dedication to interior design is evident in her eagerness to embrace new challenges and to continue growing in her role. When asked what she likes the most about working at Ideal Cabinets, Sydney says “she cherishes the positive and familial atmosphere created by her colleagues, and the supportive environment and shared commitment to excellence that make every day at the office rewarding.” She is looking forward to a fulfilling career within the family business, driven by her passion for design and the joy of working alongside those who feel like family.
Outside the office, Sydney enjoys attending church, seeing live music, and trying new restaurants. She loves watching the Hokies play football every fall. She also loves traveling; her favorite places she has been to are Barcelona, Spain, and Almafi, Italy. Sydney values spending time with her parents, three siblings, friends, and cat.
Sydney’s colleagues at Ideal think she is a treasure, and love having her at Ideal. Several have said that it inspires them to build the future of Ideal Cabinets. Eleanor Roosevelt once said that “The future belongs to those who believe in the beauty of their dreams.” That is why we believe the future belongs to our sweet Sydney.
* Disclaimer: Ken loved all of his grandchildren very much. This is only a specific example about his feelings for Sydney.
