Spruce up your tired Kitchen for the Holidays

Here come the holidays!  Here come the guests!  Those thoughts can make us tired just thinking about it!  What about your kitchen, is it tired too?  Does your kitchen look the same as it did 10, 20 or 30 years ago?  While it is too late to have your IDEAL kitchen before the festivities begin, I do have some suggestions that can give your kitchen a mini makeover by changing your décor.

Take a good look at your kitchen.  Do you still have bottles of vinegar, herbs, peppers, etc. that were a Christmas gift from your favorite aunt 20 years ago?  I am quite sure she was impressed that you proudly displayed them, but it is time to go!

Is your kitchen a victim of fake greenery?  Oh my, I remember purchasing philodendron and ivy plastic vines and thought how fantastic it looked.   If you still have faux greenery “living” on top of your wall cabinets, let’s take it down and let it die!!!!

So, do you have a sign that says “Eat and Drink” possibly hanging over a display of wine bottles? If it is an antique sign or something of meaning to you that’s okay but if not, I suggest taking the sign down.  We all know the kitchen is the place to eat and drink, no reminders needed.  I would like to suggest a bar cart or an area to store your wine rather than on the walls. I have noticed that most of the wine bottles on the wall were empty.  Who wants an empty wine bottle???? No thank you.

These are just my suggestions of what to remove, let’s talk about what you can add.  No one said you need anything above your wall cabinets, but let’s face it, it can look so naked up there!  I like to use collections as décor.  One of my clients collected cookbooks.  Never uses them but collects them, I know right??? We placed several vignettes with the cookbooks that added color and texture.  Do you have pitchers or crocks or jars?  Perfect place for them to rest safely out of the way. What about a few pieces of your mother’s china? There are hangers made for plates and what a great way to honor her!    If you have over 18 inches to the ceiling from the top of the wall cabinets, how about hanging a picture?  Possibly layered with other pictures?   You can use all the above-mentioned to add a little pazazz to your kitchen, just take a little time to place them and be careful on that ladder!

Until you can have your IDEAL kitchen maybe these suggestions will perk up your kitchen.  Happy Thanksgiving and Merry Christmas!
